Carriage & Wagon News

Our Carriage and Wagon Workshop is located at Horsted Keynes Station.

There is a special viewing area inside the workshop that you are welcome to visit. Special interactive displays tell the story of passenger carriage development in this country.

In addition, there is a gallery offering fine views of the work taking place in the main workshop area.

Current Projects in the workshop includes

London Brighton & South Coast Railway Number 7598

This First Class compartment carriage is in the workshop for an intermediate overhaul. This will include repairs to the doors and a full repaint and varnish. This carriage was built in 1903.

London Brighton & South Coast Railway Number 949

Built in 1881 this third class brake carriage is part of our long term aim to recreate a “Stroudley” train (the name of the carriage designer) and the type of train that would have once operated on the Bluebell line when it first opened in 1882.

Pullman Car “Fingall”

This Kitchen First is undergoing an intermediate overhaul in our workshop with particular attention to the roof and body frame.

Built in 1924 it is expected the Car will re-join our Golden Arrow Pullman service towards the end of 2012.

London Brighton & South Coast Railway Fruit / Milk Van

Number 270 was built at Brighton in 1908 and is a specialised van for the conveyance of food perishables from the countryside to the various market towns around the territories served by its owning company.

London Brighton & South Coast Railway Number 328

Built in 1890 this four wheeled carriage body is being restored by a team of volunteers. When complete it will seat 50 passengers in third class accommodation.

South East & Chatham Railway Number 3188

Originally built by the London Chatham Dover Railway Company, this 5 compartment 3rd class carriage was once converted to a 3rd brake. The volunteers restoring this carriage will return it back to its original condition and will provide valuable 3rd class accommodation on our 4 wheeled Victorian trains.
