East Grinstead Extension
The Bluebell Railway is currently extending our line from Kingscote Station, the current terminus of the line, into the old market town of East Grinstead.
This will extend our line by about two more miles but will pass through a cutting which became a landfill site in the late 1960’s early 1970’s.
The project to complete the extension is estimated to cost in the region of £4.5 million.
Current work includes the building of our own station platform at East Grinstead alongside the National Network Rail station and beside Sainsbury’s store which was formally opened on the 4th September 2010.
The track is in place from Kingscote station to the southern end of the cutting and we have laid the track from the other end at East Grinstead so that special waste trains can be used to help remove the infill.
Available to purchase from the Sales & Information Office at Sheffield Park is the Edition 2 East Grinstead Station Guide, charged at £3.00 it contains all the up to date information on the progress of the Extension/Station in East Grinstead. Extending to Ardingly?
Horsted Keynes Station was once a junction with a branch line to Haywards Heath via Ardingly.
The Bluebell Railway owns all the old trackbed between Horsted Keynes and Ardingly and one day hopes to restore the line to its former glory. However this is a very long term project and no work will be undertaken until the extension to East Grinstead is complete.
