These locomotives, constructed for the Southern Region of BR, and regularly used on the line from London to East Grinstead, were popularly known as “Cromptons” due to their Crompton-Parkinson electrical equipment (the engines coming from with Sulzer, providing 1,550 bhp). The Bournemouth Electrification scheme saw 19 of the standard class 33 locomotives equipped for Push-pull working to extend through services to Weymouth. These were classified KB and later 33/1, and because of the addition of high-level hose connections, nicknamed “Bagpipes”.
33108 first visited the Bluebell Railway in 2025, when it operated some services in connection with the Railway200 events, and then was a star of our Diesel Gala that year, when it operated at times in Push-pull mode with the 4VEP unit 3417 ‘Gordon Pettitt’.  This locomotive returned the following year, and proved extremely useful during the very long hot and dry summer period, when steam services had to be suspended due to the fire risk.
