The London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) E4 class were versatile locomotives designed by Robert Billinton for mixed traffic work. Introduced in the 1890s, these 0-6-2T engines became a familiar sight across Sussex and Surrey, handling suburban passenger trains, country branch lines, and even local goods duties.
Our locomotive, No. 473 Birch Grove, was built at Brighton Works in 1898. She spent much of her career on Southern services in the south-east before continuing in use under both the Southern Railway and later British Railways. Like many of her class, she proved to be a reliable and long-lived engine, serving into the 1960s.
Withdrawn in 1962, she was preserved soon after and became one of the earliest locomotives to join the Bluebell Railway collection. Today, Birch Grove is an outstanding example of a Victorian tank engine — elegant in design yet capable of hard work — and she continues to represent the everyday engines that kept local trains running across the south of England for over 60 years.
