The BR Standard Class 4 4-6-0 locomotives were designed in the 1950s as reliable all-rounders — powerful enough for heavy freight yet fast enough for passenger services. With their modern fittings, good steaming qualities and straightforward maintenance, they became a popular sight across much of the country.
Our engine, No. 75027, was built at Swindon Works in 1954. She spent her early career working trains on the Southern Region of British Railways, handling duties from London to the South Coast. Withdrawn in the mid-1960s as steam gave way to diesel, she was rescued for preservation and arrived at the Bluebell Railway in 1968 — the line’s very first ex-BR Standard engine.
Although no longer in service 75027 has been a familiar performer on the Bluebell, showing visitors what the final generation of British steam locomotives looked and felt like in action. She represents the last chapter of mainline steam in Britain, just before its end in 1968.
