Important Update – Temporary Suspension of Steam-Hauled Train Services [Updated 3 Aug 2026]
On dates where we have advertised services, we are still operating a diesel-hauled service. In addition Locomotive 72 “Fenchurch” will be in steam, giving free brake van rides (for full line ticket holders) at Sheffield Park, and visitors will have access to steam locomotives at Sheffield Park, including footplate visits.
As you are all aware, we made a very difficult but necessary decision to suspend steam-hauled service trains on our railway from Thursday 30th July until further notice.
Over recent weeks, Sussex has experienced exceptionally hot, dry weather with very little meaningful rainfall. These conditions have left the countryside through which our railway passes particularly vulnerable, significantly increasing the risk of lineside fires.
We know that seeing and travelling behind our steam locomotives is at the heart of the Bluebell Railway experience, and we share the disappointment that many of our visitors, volunteers and staff will feel. However, safeguarding the environment, supporting our neighbours and reducing the risk of fire during this period must come first.
The Bluebell Railway remains open, and there is still plenty to enjoy.
Our heritage diesel locomotives will continue to operate our scheduled passenger services, allowing visitors to experience the full length of the line, our beautifully restored stations and the stunning Sussex countryside. While the motive power may be different, the experience of travelling on our historic railway remains unchanged.
All of our dining experiences will also continue to operate as advertised, including our popular Pullman services. These trains will be hauled by our heritage diesel locomotives instead of steam, but there are no cancellations or changes to these services, and customers can look forward to the same high standard of food, service and atmosphere on board.
There is also plenty to see and do at Sheffield Park. Visitors can explore SteamWorks!, discover the fascinating history of the railway in our museum, enjoy brake van rides behind LBSCR A1X No. 72 ‘Fenchurch’ (subject to availability), visit the locomotive yard to get up close to our impressive collection of steam locomotives and even step onto the footplate of one of the locomotives on display.
Every visit during this period makes a real difference. Whether you’re travelling on one of our heritage diesel services, enjoying a dining experience, visiting our cafés and shops or spending time exploring the railway, your support helps us continue preserving Britain’s railway heritage for future generations.

Our service timetable (daily except for Mondays) has been amended and will operate as follows. All services, including our dining and supper trains, will be operated by heritage diesel locomotives.

We will continue to monitor the weather and work closely with the relevant authorities. Steam-hauled services will return as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
