Inspiring through steam power

SteamWorks! introduces visitors to the marvels of steam power which is still alive and flourishing at the Bluebell Railway. Our exhibitions aim to:

Explain the science: Discover how steam engines work, from the basics of steam generation to the intricate mechanics of locomotive operation.

Celebrate history: Learn about the pivotal role steam locomotives played in the industrial revolution and the development of modern transportation.

Engage and inspire: Provide a hands-on learning environment where visitors can engage with interactive displays and gain a deeper appreciation for the engineering feats of the past.

Step into another world at SteamWorks!

Located on Platform 1 at Sheffield Park Station, SteamWorks! offers an immersive and interactive experience designed to inform, inspire and entertain visitors of all ages. Now part of the Museum, SteamWorks! integrates seamlessly with our broader exhibits to be found in the Museum. Both SteamWorks! and the Museum enhance the enjoyment of a visit to the Bluebell Railway.

The star of the show is an interactive model of a locomotive – based on our very own locomotive ‘Stepney’ (as featured in the Thomas the Tank Engine books). It features a display showing how the engine’s boiler works, and a special driving experience simulator in the cab enables you to experience what it’s like to drive Stepney on the Bluebell Railway.

After experiencing the interactive model of Stepney, stepping onto the footplate of the actual world-famous locomotive will be an unforgettable experience.

Is SteamWorks! accessible?

Accessibility

Sheffield Park Station has two museums: SteamWorks, located on Platform One, and The Waiting Room on Platform Two, located on Platform Two.

Arrival and Parking

Public transport options are limited. If arriving by bus, the stop is located at the top of the station driveway, near the main station building. From there, it is a 40-meter walk on a slightly uphill, metalled surface.

Visitors arriving by car may use the lower car park, or if you are a Blue Badge holder, the designated accessible parking area in the upper car park, which is closer to the station building. The route from both car parks to the station is gently uphill along a metalled road.

Around the Station

The booking hall and general station area have flat surfaces. If using the footbridge to cross the tracks is not suitable, platform staff can escort visitors via the level crossing at the south end of the station.

Accessible toilets are available on both Platform One and Platform Two. The Bessemer Restaurant is fully accessible.

Museums and Exhibits

SteamWorks is a working locomotive shed. It can be noisy and has a rugged, industrial environment, as expected in a building housing steam locomotives. Access to three locomotive footplates is available, though only one can accommodate mobility aids.

The Waiting Room on Platform Two Museum is accessible to mobility aid users, except for the 1866 Signal Box, which can be accessed only up to its doorway.

Additional Support

  • Large print guide sheets are available upon request at The Waiting Room on Platform Two Museum.
  • Hearing loop systems are not currently available at the station.
  • Stewards are on hand to assist in The Waiting Room on Platform Two Museum.
  • Platform staff are available to assist across the station.
  • In SteamWorks, staff may not always be present, but assistance can be requested from Platform One.

General Notes

Please be aware that Sheffield Park is part of a working heritage railway. Steam locomotives and other moving railway vehicles are regularly in operation. These can be noisy and may produce steam and smells that some visitors may find overwhelming or distressing.

We are committed to making your visit as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. If you have any specific accessibility needs or questions ahead of your visit, please contact us in advance.
