We’re really excited! Our new innovative, interactive experience will be opening on 20th October at Sheffield Park station!
For the past 3 years, and in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sunninghill Construction Ltd, RFA Design and Aivaf Ltd, we’ve been hard at work to bring this fabulous exhibition to life.
Situated in the locomotive shed, SteamWorks! uses touchscreen displays, information boards, and interactives to bring the science and mechanics of steam to life.
The star of the show is an interactive model of a locomotive! Based on our very own Terrier Class locomotive ‘Stepney’ (as featured in the Thomas the Tank Engine book series), this special ‘engine’ features a display showing how the engine’s boiler works, and, as an added bonus, a special driving experience simulator in the cab will enable you to experience what it’s like to drive Stepney on the Bluebell Railway!
You’ll also be able to get up close to some of our beautiful locomotives on display. Special walkways and platforms will enable you to examine and wonder at the engineering involved and even let you climb onto the footplates of some of the engines!
To celebrate the opening of SteamWorks! we’re holding a special 2-day Family Festival on the 20th & 21st October between 10am & 4pm
In addition to all the wonderful parts of our new exhibition, there’ll be lots of other exciting things to see and do:
- ‘Blast Science’ will be putting on their fabulous ‘Family Forces’ science show – with interactive live experiments and lashings of comedy – this show about Forces and Physics is sure to be a real eye-opener!
- ‘Weald Technology’ will be with us with a range of hands-on activities for you to try – see how capacitors, batteries, and solar power can drive a car’s wheels. Use circuit boards to test a propeller and light bulb, and have a go at rapid-charging a capacitor from a battery system. See how wind turbines generate electricity and store it for when the wind isn’t blowing! Test electric cars on a special test track to see which is best – a wheel-driven, or a propeller-driven?
- ‘Cultural Carriage’ will be full of fun experiments, music making, book readings and hands-on experiences with objects relating to the science & mechanics of steam.
We’ll also have our new ‘SteamWorks!’ activity book on sale – packed with fun-filled steam activities for 7-11yr olds!
SteamWorks! Family Festival is sure to be a winner with everyone from 0-99yrs! So save the date and come and join us for what promises to be a fun-packed, brain-expanding, super exciting weekend at SteamWorks!
