The Bluebell Railway’s much-loved Giants of Steam gala returns this October.

Celebrating the power, presence, and prestige of Britain’s largest and most impressive steam locomotives.

Following the success of previous Giants of Steam events — which have seen some of the country’s most famous heavy express engines working intensive services across the line — the 2026 gala promises another unforgettable weekend of big engines, big sounds, and big spectacle.

We are delighted to announce that 71000 Duke of Gloucester* will be a guest locomotive.

Built at British Railways’ Crewe Works in 1954, Duke of Gloucester is the sole member of the BR Standard Class 8 Pacifics and one of the most fascinating steam locomotives ever constructed. Designed under R. A. Riddles, it featured advanced engineering including three cylinders and Caprotti valve gear, representing the ultimate development of British steam locomotive design.

Although its potential was not fully realised during BR service, the locomotive was saved from scrapping and underwent an extensive preservation-era rebuild that corrected its original design flaws. Since returning to steam in 1986, Duke of Gloucester has proven itself to be a powerful, efficient, and highly capable express locomotive — a true giant in every sense.

Its appearance at the Bluebell Railway offers a rare opportunity to see this unique locomotive operating in a heritage setting, adding considerable prestige to the 2026 event.

A weekend of big steam action!

Giants of Steam is renowned for showcasing:
  • Large express and mixed-traffic locomotives in intensive service
  • Heavy trains that allow these engines to perform at their best
  • A packed timetable designed to maximise locomotive mileage
  • Numerous photographic opportunities across the railway

Combined with the Bluebell Railway’s scenic Sussex setting and traditional station environments, the gala recreates the drama and atmosphere of the steam era at its most impressive.

Whether you are a long-time enthusiast or visiting for the first time, Giants of Steam 2026 promises a spectacular celebration of Britain’s most powerful steam locomotives.
