SteamWorks! at Sheffield Park Station

An immersive, hands-on experience designed to inform, inspire, and entertain visitors of all ages.

Located on Platform 1 at Sheffield Park Station, you can get closer than ever to our magnificent steam locomotives—even step onto the footplate and imagine life as an engine driver.

Now part of the Museum, SteamWorks! connects seamlessly with the wider displays in the Museum on Platform 2. Together, they bring the story of railways to life and add an extra dimension to your visit to the Bluebell Railway.

Where to find us

SteamWorks! is located on Platform 1 at Sheffield Park Station, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 3QL. The entrance to the Bluebell Railway is clearly signposted from the surrounding approach roads, making it easy to find us.

Housed within a genuine working locomotive shed, SteamWorks! offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the world of steam. Please be aware that the environment reflects its industrial nature: it can be noisy, a little dusty, and during the winter months, quite cold—so we recommend dressing accordingly.

Visitors can step onto the footplates of three locomotives. Please note that only one of these can accommodate mobility aids.

Accessibility

SteamWorks! is located on Platform 1 at Sheffield Park Station. We are committed to making your visit as enjoyable and comfortable as possible, and our staff are always happy to help.

Arrival and Parking
  • By public transport: Bus services are limited. The nearest stop is at the top of the station driveway, near the main station building. From there, it is a 40-metre walk along a slightly uphill, surfaced path.
  • By car: Visitors may use the lower car park. Blue Badge holders may park in the designated accessible spaces in the upper car park, closer to the station. From both car parks, the route to the station is gently uphill on a metalled road. There is no charge for car parking.
Around the Station
  • The booking hall and station platforms are on flat, accessible surfaces.
  • If the footbridge is not suitable, staff can escort visitors via the level crossing at the south end of the station.
  • Accessible toilets are available on both Platform 1 and Platform 2.
  • The Bessemer Restaurant is fully accessible.
SteamWorks! and Exhibits
  • SteamWorks! itself is accessible to mobility aid users.
  • Visitors can step onto the footplates of three locomotives; however, please note that only one is accessible for mobility aids.
Additional Support
  • SteamWorks! is part of a working locomotive shed. The environment is rugged and industrial: it may be noisy, dirty, and, in colder months, chilly—please dress warmly.
  • Steam locomotives and other railway vehicles are often in operation, producing steam, smoke, and smells that are reminiscent of the railways of the past that some visitors may find overwhelming.
Support
  • Platform staff are available throughout the station to assist where needed.
  • If you have any specific accessibility requirements or questions, please contact us in advance so we can make your visit as smooth as possible.
