Volk’s Railway

The electric railway that runs eastwards along Brighton’s seafront is the oldest working electric railway in the world. When Magnus Volk proposed its construction, there was local opposition. One minister advised his congregation not to go near ‘this invention of the devil”. But when it opened on 4th August 1883, crowds of people turned up to witness this technological marvel.

This video charts the story of the railway from its inception, through its centenary in 1983 and up to the present day. Magnus Volk’s story is central to the presentation which includes still photographs and some archive film sequences. An attractive memento of a transport pioneer.
