Our Diesel Footplate experiences are back for 2025 with a difference!
The experience is a must for anyone wishing to have their turn at driving a unique vintage BR Diesel Shunter on our railway!
The Diesel Footplate Experience offers approximately two hours of hands-on driving adventure and fun, where each participant will drive our resident BR 350hp Diesel Shunter D4106 (courtesy of our friends at the D4106 & D6570 Preservation Group) on a return journey from Horsted Keynes to East Grinstead.
Along the way, you’ll pass through the impressive 731-yard (668 m) Sharpthorne Tunnel, the longest tunnel on a UK heritage railway—a thrilling highlight for any railway enthusiast!

Light refreshments and a hot drink will be provided for participants on the day from Horsted Keynes. Guests can purchase refreshments on the day.
Please note: All participants must arrive 30 minutes before their booked driving experience time.
Book a Brake Van ride for your guests!
There is a chance to travel in our Southern Railway brake van between Horsted Keynes and East Grinstead alongside your experience. Not only is this opportunity available to your guests, it’s open to everyone! This is an additional fee of £25 per person and can be booked via the button below (this is separate from booking the main Diesel Footplate Taster event).
